Where your EPF money actually goes

Every month, 12% of your Basic + DA comes out of your salary and goes straight into your EPF account. Your employer is also supposed to contribute a matching 12% — but unlike your own contribution, that entire amount doesn't land in your EPF balance. A fixed slice of it — 8.33% of wages capped at ₹15,000/month, itself capped at ₹1,250/month — is diverted into EPS, the Employees' Pension Scheme, which is a completely separate government pension pot with its own formula-based payout, not a balance that grows the way EPF does. Only what's left of your employer's contribution after that actually compounds alongside your own money.

This is why your EPF corpus grows more slowly than a naive "12% + 12% of Basic, compounding" calculation would suggest — a meaningful chunk of the employer side is quietly being redirected the entire time. It's also why two employees earning the exact same Basic salary can end up with noticeably different EPF balances at retirement, if one employer calculates contributions on the actual (uncapped) Basic and the other sticks to the ₹15,000 statutory minimum — the EPS carve-out stays the same either way, but the EPF-core portion that actually compounds does not.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I and my employer contribute to EPF?

Both you and your employer contribute 12% of your Basic salary + DA each month, as a statutory minimum — some employees voluntarily contribute more through VPF (Voluntary Provident Fund), which has no upper cap. Your employer's 12%, however, isn't entirely credited to your EPF balance — a slice of it is diverted to a separate pension scheme first.

What is EPS, and why isn't all of my employer's contribution in my EPF balance?

EPS (Employees' Pension Scheme) is a separate government pension scheme, not part of your withdrawable EPF corpus. 8.33% of your employer's contribution — calculated on wages capped at ₹15,000/month regardless of your actual Basic — goes to EPS, capped at ₹1,250/month. Only what's left of your employer's contribution after that actually lands in your EPF balance and compounds alongside your own contribution.

What is the current EPF interest rate, and how is it calculated?

EPFO declared 8.25% p.a. for FY 2025-26, the third consecutive year at this rate. Interest is calculated monthly on your running balance but credited to your account only once, at financial year-end — a mechanic similar to PPF. This rate is fixed annually by EPFO's Central Board of Trustees, typically between February and May, so check EPFO's current notification before relying on it for a long-term projection.

What is the ₹15,000 PF wage ceiling, and can my employer contribute on my full salary?

₹15,000/month is the statutory minimum wage base for PF contributions — legally, an employer only has to calculate PF on whichever is lower: your actual Basic + DA, or ₹15,000. Many employers choose to contribute on your full Basic anyway, which increases both your own and your employer's contribution (though EPS stays capped at the ₹15,000 ceiling either way) — check your payslip or ask HR which convention your employer follows.

Can I withdraw my EPF before retirement?

Full withdrawal is normally available at retirement (58) or after being continuously unemployed for 2 months. Partial withdrawal is allowed earlier for specific purposes — such as a home purchase, medical treatment, wedding, or education — subject to conditions on years of service and withdrawal limits that vary by purpose, set by EPFO rules.
